Breathing New Life into a Small Bathroom: A Green and Gold Renovation
Before
My Oakland clients were in desperate need of a renovation for their master bathroom. Moisture had seeped into the walls and subfloor over the last few years causing mildew and mold issues. The husband, was particularly tall and found showering to be very cumbersome because of the low shower head height. The vanity also lacked storage and usable counter space.
They gave me a pretty decent budget but we had to spend it wisely considering all the water damage. They also wanted something with color so it wouldn’t end up as another bland white bathroom.
The Design Plan
My clients wanted color but they didn’t want to overwhelm the space either. Much of the work was also hidden so we had to be mindful of designating enough budget to both the design and repairing the water damage.
Here’s what we did:
- Modern Oak Vanity with Brass Fixtures
The vanity was a game-changer. I chose a 48″ oak vanity from TileBar that’s warm and modern, paired with brass fixtures for a bit of shimmer. It solved the issue of needing additional counter space and storage while adding some much needed natural texture. - Green Ceramic Tile
To bring in the requested color, we used sage green ceramic tiles from TileBar in the shower and on the entire backsplash wall. The muted green tile all over the walls completely changed the feel of the room by adding the right amount of color. We also added a green penny tile in the shower niche. - Gold Accents
To complement the green tiles, I added gold sconces from Amazon on either side of a gold-framed medicine cabinet mirror from Kohler. The subtle sparkle of these accents tied everything together and made the room feel cohesive. - Fixtures
We invested in some higher quality fixtures from Signature Hardware for the shower. We also added shelves above the toilet for additional storage. We purchased the brackets from Rejuvenation but saved some money in the budget by having someone else cut and finish the wood.
The Final Look
This green and gold bathroom transformation was incredible. What was once a moldy, bland, and outdated bathroom is now a space that feels vibrant and luxurious. The green tiles bring a fresh energy, while the oak vanity adds warmth and texture. And most importantly, the bathroom is now fully functional and free of those pesky water issues.
Seeing my client’s reaction was the best part. They told me the space finally feels like “them,” which is exactly what I strive for in every project.
Takeaway
If you’re thinking about a renovation, don’t shy away from adding a bit of color or personality. Even small spaces can make a big impact with the right choices. It’s all about finding a balance between style and functionality—and making sure the space feels like you.
